We need jobs! We need jobs!! We need jobs!!! is the ultimate cry of the Nigerian youths and Edo South is not an exception. We need jobs that are capable of paying the bills, jobs we can learn and grow on, jobs that match our interests and passions, and jobs we can be proud of. Stop harassing us and labeling us with unpalatable names; Yahoo Yahoo, Agberos, Land grabbers, Lazy youths. We are enlightened youths hustling to survive, jobs aren’t common around here.
When hardworking parents send their children to school, it is with the hope of getting gainful employment, even in planned societies, the uneducated have their niche. It is the fulfillment of this promise that gladdens the heart of fathers, mothers, and guardians, not an adult child that remains a burden because jobs aren’t common around here.
The greatest threat to our collective peace and prosperity today is joblessness, not because the citizens are lazy, but because jobs aren’t common around here. Rich Benin including those who have made money off our common patrimony has repatriated our resources for investments abroad with no opportunity for local participation or tax contribution to grow our government revenue for improved infrastructure.
This is not the story of Hon. Valentine Asuen the Edo South Senatorial Candidate of the APC. From a humble beginning, a private young Benin son stayed back home to build one of the biggest and most celebrated domestic brands, DVD Oil and Gas; a brand synonymous with chains of petroleum and gas stations, eateries, haulage, and sundry, employing hundreds directly and thousands indirectly, building motivation for new investors and remitting taxes to our government.
When we pray to God for the development of our land, it will not be part of God’s business to help us take reasonable actions. If we want more indigenes to love home and build more businesses to employ more people, it will not be a function of prayers but how we behave towards and support those who have done so. If we want more jobs, we must appreciate those who have created many and offer them the necessary support to do more.
DVD is a new name for job creation in Edo South. He has made an overwhelming mark in a short period of less than a decade, and offered himself to be sent to the Senate as a messenger of jobs for Edo South youths; a true definition of ‘SABI’. Would you rather leave your house on election day and put your thumbprint elsewhere? Then, you must ask yourself, what has his opponent contributed to the betterment of the Benin Kingdom beyond enriching themselves with public funds?
