Iyamu Victor Ola popularly known as the ‘n’ kpemekaba’ is a unique ‘Ekaba’ drummer in Urhonigbe town, a sub-uban environment in Orhionmwon local government area of Edo state, one of the southern state that makes up the six states of the oil rish Niger-Delta, Nigeria.
Iyamu is widely referred to by Edo lover, especially the benins as ‘Omwan’kpema’ n’Ekaba, Ekaba festival that is traditionally organised in Urhonigbe town in the month of December during the annual Ekaba dance.
The Ekaba festival is a traditional festival that has been in existence for over 500 years. And is usually hosted traditionally by both old, Sons and Daughters with special dancing performance, though can be perform individually when the drummer wishes to prosecute that solely but can only happen if the ‘Okpema’ traditional drummer is ready for such.
Ola’s pattern and style of manipulating the Emekaba is uniquely special, this has earned him the special name, ‘Ola n’ Okpemekaba N’ola’. And has given him golden opportunities to travelled to major towns in Edo state and major cities in both southern and eastern states of the federal republic of Nigeria to show case the rich culture of Urhonigbe descendants cum Edos.
Always seen with his traditionally caved drum and sticks, Ola ‘n’kpemekaba’ is traditionally bound to always prepare himself for performance every December. Even when he is outside of the Benin kingdom but MUST be physically present in Urhonigbe come every December.
