The chairman of Owan West local government area, Dickson Ahonsi, and five elected councillors have defected to the All Progressives Congress, APC from People Democratic Party, PDP.
Ahonsi said their decision to join the APC on Friday was influenced by the steps taken so far by Governor Okpebholo to develop the state.
Similarly, chairman of Ovia South West local government area of Edo state, Edosa Enowoghomenma, also defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
The embattled Council chair, who is of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), defected alongside eight elected councillors, including the Leader of the House, Nosakhare Edobor.
Speaking, Enowoghomenma said, “We thought it wise to pitch a tent with the APC in Ovia South West LGA, to work harmoniously with our governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, and the deputy governor, Dennis Idahosa, who is our son.”
The development came amid a stand-off between Council bosses and Governor Monday Okpebholo during which four local government chairmen have reportedly been impeached.
The Owan defectors were received by the state secretary of the APC, Engr. Lawrence Okah, while defectors from Ovia South West were received by the chairman of the party, Emmanuel Ogbomo.
Okah, while receiving the Ovia Council chairman and councillors into the APC fold, said the doors of the party were open to receive more defectors.
“We have long been expecting you to join us. APC now has five Councillors in Owan West and more will come. Use the broom to mobilise other people to join the party,” Okah added.
