Edo State Commissioner of Police, Monday Agbonika, has appealed to the Inspector General of Police, Olatunji Disu, for urgent intervention in addressing critical operational challenges facing the command.
Agbonika made the appeal during the official visit of the IGP to the Edo State Police Command, he said the command required improved logistics, arms and ammunition, armoured personnel carriers and manpower to effectively tackle insecurity across the state.
The CP noted, “the command is confronted with shortage of operational vehicles, insufficient arms and ammunition, inadequate armoured personnel carriers to confront bandits, manpower deficits as well as the need for continuous specialised training and retraining of personnel.”
The Police Commissioner noted that despite the challenges, the command has remained committed to combating violent crimes through proactive policing, intelligence-led operations and strategic deployment of tactical assets.
He disclosed that the command had intensified high-visibility policing, bush-combing operations, intelligence-driven raids and confidence-building patrols across identified criminal hideouts and flashpoints within the State.
Agbonika further stated that the command has continued to strengthen community-oriented policing and collaboration with sister security agencies, traditional rulers, community leaders and other stakeholders in maintaining peace and order.
He said the sustained security operations had resulted in the arrest of suspected kidnappers, armed robbery suspects and members of criminal gangs terrorising parts of the State.
The commissioner also attributed recent operational successes recorded by the newly launched Violent Crime Response Units (VCRU) to the leadership and reforms introduced by the IGP.
He commended the Inspector General for his support to the command in the areas of logistics, tactical operations and personnel development, saying such interventions had enhanced policing activities in the State.
Agbonika, however, appealed for further support to strengthen the operational capacity of the command and improve its ability to respond swiftly to emerging security threats.
