The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has established an Artificial Intelligence Division to enhance data-driven decision-making, risk detection, and voter services ahead of the 2027 general elections.
INEC National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Mr. Sam Olumekun, disclosed this in Abuja after the Commission’s weekly meeting. He said the division, domiciled in the ICT Department, will also provide geo-spatial intelligence to support logistics optimization, material distribution, and polling unit allocation.

“It will enhance decision-making through data-driven insights, risk management and voter engagement. Furthermore, it will strengthen electoral credibility through predictive analytics, automation and intelligent safeguards,” Olumekun stated.
INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Ojo Amupitan (SAN), said the Commission is harnessing AI to improve data management, voter registration and results transmission. He noted that the Commission will participate in the Global Conference on Responsible AI and Elections organized by UNDP and Elections Canada in Ottawa from September 9 to 11, 2026, to develop strategies against AI-driven threats such as deepfakes and disinformation.
The Commission also announced plans to leverage the National Identity Management Commission database of over 136 million NINs to audit and cleanse the national voter register, in order to tackle duplicate registrations and identity-related electoral fraud.

Olumekun added that the creation of the AI Division will enable the Commission to better coordinate and maximize existing technology investments through centralized AI governance, while mitigating the negative impact of AI on elections.
