The Edo State Consumer Protection Committee on Tuesday carried out major operation in enforcing the ban on sachet gin/alcoholic drinks by NAFDAC.
The enforcement exercise which was led by the chairman, Mr Iyamu Osaro Culture covered several hotspots including Mission Road, Ekiosa Market, and St. Saviour area in Benin City.
During the operation, the Committee seized large quantities of sachet gin and discovered that most of the seized products were found to have expired while some were confirmed to be fake/counterfeit.
In a shocking discovery during the enforcement exercise , the Chairman detected a shop where a young man was using Sniper (insecticide) to preserve beans. Upon interrogation, the young man confessed to the crime. The Chairman immediately ordered his arrest through the police operatives attached to the operation from St Saviour Police Division. The suspect is currently under investigation while samples of the exhibit (beans) have been taken for laboratory analysis.
There was however little resistance from vendors of sachet gin, but the team subdued them with superior arguments and professionalism.
