The University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH), led by the Chief Medical Director, Prof. Idia Ize-Iyamu on Thursday received commendation from the Nigerian Institute of Science Laboratory Technology (NISLT) following the successful establishment of a Drug Testing Centre at the hospital.
Prof. Ize-Iyamu, accompanied by the management staff of UBTH, received the delegation from the Nigerian Institute of Science Laboratory Technology (NISLT) led by the Acting Director General, Dr. Adefisoye Oluwafisoye in Benin.
Speaking during the visit, the CMD noted that the initiative is part of the UBTH CARES Agenda designed to proactively address the rising tide of drug and substance abuse in the region.
Presenting the letter of commendation to the Chief Medical Director, Dr. Oluwafisoye lauded the management for their dedication to advancing healthcare delivery and scientific standards in the country.
Dr. Oluwafisoye, who was represented by the south-south zonal director, Dr. Gboyega Alalade said the letter of commendation from the NISLT is to commend the management of UBTH on the establishment of the drug testing centre at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH).
According to him, substance abuse has become a major public and social concern with far-reaching consequences for individuals, families, workplaces, and communities.
Dr. Oluwafisoye noted that the establishment of a specialized facility dedicated to the screening and testing of alcohol and substances of abuse will contribute significantly to early detection, prevention, intervention, research, and evidence-based public health responses.

This is a laudable and timely initiative that deserves the commendation and support of relevant stakeholders. “,Oluwafisoye said.
