The Edo State Flood, Erosion and Watershed Management Agency (EDOFEWMA) has called for early intervention in erosion-prone areas across the state to prevent small gullies from developing into major environmental disasters.
The agency’s Chief Executive Officer, Mr Mohammed Okoyomoh, made the call during a stakeholders’ engagement on soil erosion control and stabilisation involving a University of Lagos team in Benin City.
Okoyomoh said the meeting was aimed at finding practical and sustainable solutions to the challenges of erosion and flooding confronting communities across Edo State.
According to him, the agency has identified several large gullies across Edo’s three senatorial districts. He stressed that addressing erosion at its early stages would help prevent the problems from becoming more severe.
He also disclosed that EDOFEWMA has completed more than 35 designs for erosion-control projects across the state, following the mandate and support of the Edo State Government.
