The Nigeria Union of Journalists NUJ, Edo State Council, has appealed to the military and the Nigeria Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, to ensure journalists’ safety and protection during the forthcoming Edo State governorship election on September 21, 2024.
NUJ State Council Chairman, Comrade Festus Alenkhe, made the request during a familiarization visit to the 4Brigade Commander, Brigadier General Ebenezer Oduayo, and the Edo State Commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps NSCDC, Commandant Agun Gbenga Joseph.
Alenkhe emphasized the need for collaboration between the military, NSCDC and journalists, highlighting the importance of protecting media professionals from harm.
He distinguished between professional journalists and quacks, urging the security operatives to support legitimate media operations.

Said the army has always had a harmonious relationship with the journalists promising to continue to sustain the fit.
General Oduayo encouraged journalists who are accredited to cover the gubernatorial election in the state to appear with a means of identification during the election exercise to avoid confrontation with security operatives.
On his part, Commandant Agun Gbenga Joseph, assured the NUJ of the civil defence corps’ commitment to media safety, especially during the election period.

He outlined the NSCDC’s roles, including safety and security, critical infrastructure protection, community policing, disaster management, and voter education.
Senior members of the Edo State Council including the Vice Chairman, Comrade Imelda Elogie Osayande, the secretary Comrade Andy Egbon, Assistant Secretary Elvis Omoregie, Solomon Obozunya, Paul Iduozee and some Chapel leaders were present at the occasion.
