The Nigeria Police Force has issued a nationwide security alert over intelligence reports indicating planned coordinated attacks by terrorist groups targeting schools, places of worship, and National Youth Service Corps orientation camps.
In a statement released on Monday, September 14, 2026, as schools prepare to resume for the 2026/2027 academic session, police authorities said the North-East, North-West, North-Central and parts of the South-West have been placed on high alert.
According to the security advisory, the planned attacks are believed to be aimed at soft targets with large gatherings of students and worshippers.
Stakeholders on alert include the Nigeria Police Force, which issued the advisory and directed all state commands to intensify patrols, the Department of State Services and other intelligence agencies, the Federal Ministry of Education and state ministries of education, the NYSC management where orientation camps nationwide were asked to review security protocols, the Christian Association of Nigeria and Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, and school proprietors, principals, and chief security officers of tertiary institutions.
The police urged citizens to be security conscious and report suspicious movements and persons to the nearest security agency.
Parents and guardians were also advised to educate their children on safety measures, while worship centres were asked to install and make functional CCTV cameras and employ trained security personnel.
Security experts have called on the government to deploy more personnel to rural schools, many of which remain vulnerable.
As of press time, the police said operations have been intensified and that the public would be updated on developments.
