SMELL THE COFFEE GUYS
By Liberty ‘Ruyi
When I set out to write this open letter after closely monitoring the various choices, and following the zeal, time, and energy majority of my brothers and friends have invested and still investing into the selfless service of making Mr. Peter Obi President, I knew clearly that I needed to be patient with them seeing that they are driven by the emotion to get Nigeria working. Yes, a Nigeria we can all be proud of. A country that guarantees our security and lifelong opportunities amidst basic amenities.
Like Dave, Humphrey, Luke, Ode, Oscar, Super, Unuagbon, Eric, Ohis, Simon, Frank, and others too numerous to mention, I desire a Nigeria flowing with abundance as nature has intended when it blessed us with sufficient human capital and natural resources. Indeed, our nation and her people have no reasons to suffer amid plenty but wicked and incompetent leadership remains our biggest challenge. We all want to see and enjoy the full manifestation of a truly blessed nation.
A Telephone Call From An Old Slave
Humphrey will say Phenylalanine and Dave smiles, but the capacity to illustrate graphic details is not in being a good man but being molecularly exposed. Oscar will agree that knowing the names and interpretation of the different rock formations is not what makes a great Geologist but field work and real-life experiences. We all look but see differently, the white man calls it perception. Yours isn’t smarter than mine and vice versa.
Politics is not a game of emotion. As much as every literate seems to be convinced of their political enlightenment due to inherent interest in society and information, politics, particularly democracy remains a science that deals with figures; it applies basic statistics, human behavior, and a doze of experience that can not come from books only but practical experiences. Like in every profession and vocation, some are more skilled and hardworking than others, and following Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Alhaji Atiku Abubakar’s history, there is no doubt that these men are Professors in this game and Mr. Peter Obi will qualify as their privileged student.

My letter is not intended at arguing who is more competent to take Nigeria out of the wood. I argued that enough in support of Mohammadu Buhari in 2015 only to realize that I was only emotional and hungry for a new Nigeria without genuine and in-depth recourse to history. So, the messianic message is not in my 2023 episode. I now view it like a game of sports where the best preparation is favored by chance to win.
You already know that I am a Member of the All Progressives Congress and my presidential candidate is Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu. This is why you can not take my position in the presidential debate as being objective, whereas, they largely are. Asiwaju and the APC know their opponent, and the only person that they need to defeat to reach the presidency with Tinubu is Atiku Abubakar. This is where you may be irritated but follow the simple logic below and conclude on your answer like being correct offers a million dollars. No sentiments, no emotions.
According to INEC’s latest record, there are 176,974 Polling Units for the 2023 general elections. In each of these units, every political party is expected to submit the name, phone number, and photograph of one agent each to stand in as the party’s representative. That is, to maintain an official presence in all the 176,974 Polling Units, every political party needs 176,974 capable Nigerians of voting age with a considerable level of literacy to be able to educate their party supporters, protect their party’s ballots, sign result sheets, and where need arises appear in court for that Polling Unit. As it is said, the authorized agent is the only party representative that officially liaises with INEC Adhoc Staff on any serious matter. He or she is the only one permitted near the INEC Adhoc Staff table.
We are now counting the hours to the election and INEC has released the number of Polling Unit agents provided by the various parties; Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s APC has agents in all the 176,974 Polling Units representing 100 percent, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar’s PDP has agents in all the Polling Units representing 100 percent, Mr. Peter Obi’s Labour Party has agents in 41,234 Polling Units out of the 176,974 representing 23.3 percent while Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso’s NNPP has agents in 23,460 Polling Units representing 13.2 percent.
I do not deserve your reply because you seem to love Nigeria more than I do, but I need you to face the reality that your next president is either a Yoruba Tinubu or another Fulani Atiku. Voting Obi is a good choice but it is not in any way close to reality. Obi’s presidency as incompetent and regrettable as it would have turned out is an illusion, but like John the Baptist, Mr. Peter Obi is awakening the consciousness of Nigerians to challenge the status quo and make tough demands on leadership to perform as Nigeria can’t tolerate a slide further.

I urge you guys to be intellectual and courageous as always in supporting the rotational presidency that the south deserves in 2023. Emotions don’t win wars, but tact and courage do. Join to make the southern presidency a reality. Risking it on the altar of the emotion of Mr. Peter Obi’s illusional presidency is one mistake we can not afford to make in our lifetime. The next generation will not forgive us for ignorantly selling them into socio-political and economic slavery.
