The National President of Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Comrade Alhassan Yahya, has commended Kano State Council of the union for its innovative approaches, inclusive leadership, and consistent programs that are capable of uniting and advancing the union’s members.
Comrade Yahaya made these remarks during a dinner and award night marking the closing ceremony of the 2025 NUJ Press Week, held at the Press Centre in Kano.
He described the Kano Council as one he is “always proud of,” praising leaders at all levels for their commitment and teamwork.
He also expressed gratitude to Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf for his dedication and significant investment in journalism, which has strengthened media practice in the state.
Comrade Alhassan Urged journalists to embrace professionalism and responsibility ahead of 2026. He encouraged members to act as ambassadors for the profession by setting the right agenda and safeguarding journalism’s image in Nigeria.
He revealed that the NUJ national leadership is pursuing new initiatives, including improved remuneration for journalists in federal media organizations, with ongoing discussions with the Minister of Information. Once implemented, the union will advocate for similar measures across all 36 states.
Additionally, he announced plans for a health insurance scheme for journalists to reduce out-of-pocket expenses, lower maternal mortality, and support the drive toward universal health coverage.
Kano State Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Comrade Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, reaffirmed Governor Yusuf’s commitment to journalists’ welfare and professional development. He highlighted ministry reforms, including capacity-building programs, a state media information policy, the inclusion of online media practitioners, and the establishment of a veterans’ league to mentor younger journalists.
Earlier, the Chairman of the NUJ Kano State Council, Comrade Sulaiman Dederi, stated that the 2025 Press Week aimed to promote unity and engagement among members. Activities included prayers, a novelty match, training sessions, and visits to sick members and families of deceased colleagues.
During the occasion, awards were presented to Comrade Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, former National President of the Nigerian Guild of Editors Baba Halilu Dantiye, and Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, Director General of Media and Communications to the Kano State Governor.
The program ended with the commissioning of the Kano State Online Media Chapel office, alongside goodwill messages from veterans and well-wishers.
National Vice President Zone A, Comrade Muhammad Tukur, Zonal Secretary Zone A, Comrade Abdul’razak Bello Kaura, Chairman NUJ Jigawa State Council Comrade Ismaila Ibrahim Dutse, Vice Chairman NUJ Jigawa State Council, Comrade Nura Sani Bello and Comrade Aminu Umar Shuwajo Acting Secretary, Jigawa State Council graced the occasion.
