Aiguobasinmwin Movement Worldwide has called on the governor of Edo State, Sen Monday Okpebholo to urgently fulfill the renovation and other promises he made concerning Oba Akenzua cultural centre during his 2024 campaign.
They said it appears like Okpebholo has now abandoned the promise to revive the centre and hand it over to the Palace for the initial thirty years as approved under Oshiomhole administration.
According to the statement signed by the group president, Mr. Iyamu Osaro Culture, secretary general, Mr. Osayuki-Osa Benson, Secretary General and Mr. Monday Ohuimumwen, diaspora coordinator made available to DAILY-FLASH, the group is accusing Okpebholo of failing to fulfil one of his core campaign promises.
“For the avoidance of doubt, Oba Akenzua Cultural Centre is a National Monument built during the military era and donated to the Edo State Government. It was named after Oba Akenzua.
“During the Oshiomhole administration, the then Governor leased the Centre to the Palace for initial 30 years. When Governor Obaseki came onboard, he terminated the lease agreement.
“During the 2024 Governorship elections, Governor Monday Okpebholo promised to revive the centre and hand it over to the palace for the initial thirty years approved under Oshiomhole and that promise is yet to be fulfilled.
They noted that it is now worrisome as the centre is gradually turning into a forest in the heart of Benin City.
They appealed to Governor Monday Okpebholo to fulfil one of the promises he made to us during the 2024 Governorship elections regarding the revival of Oba Akenzua Cultural Centre.
